Filming an NCPS Regional Connectors Event in Brighton

In February I was commissioned by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS) to film a Regional Connectors event in Brighton as an event videographer Brighton, capturing two powerful keynote talks on trauma and suicide prevention for use across their digital channels. My brief was to produce event coverage and then video content that would allow NCPS members who could not attend in person to benefit from the training, while also creating short, shareable clips for future online learning resources.

Filming schedule and approach

I had access to the Globe room at Nile house Brighton from 9:30am, with the first keynote starting at 10:15am and the second at 11am, each allocated a 45‑minute slot. This set‑up window was enough time to position the two cameras, run audio checks, and agree final framing with the NCPS organisers and speakers, while keeping the footprint in the room as low‑key as possible. I opted for a two‑camera setup: a locked‑off wide shot to cover the full stage and slides, and a tighter angle to capture facial expression and body language, which is crucial when filming training on relational and emotional themes. Discreet lapel microphones and a feed from the venue sound system ensured clean, intelligible audio that would stand up well in an online learning environment.

Working with Rose Rowkins – talking about suicide in the therapy room

The second keynote, delivered by Rose Rowkins of Start the Conversation Ltd, focused on “Talking About Suicide in the Therapy Room”. For this session we agreed to keep the visuals simple and grounded, prioritising a calm, steady shot that supported the content rather than drawing attention to the camera. I captured a mixture of medium and closer shots to reflect the nuance and emotional weight of the subject, and recorded additional room tone and audience reactions to help NCPS create an immersive edit that still felt safe for viewers. Rose’s session will be used to support therapists in building confidence around suicide prevention, so lighting, colour and audio were all balanced to feel clear, warm and professional rather than clinical.

The event took place in the Globe Room at Projects Nile House on Nile Street in central Brighton, a modern co‑working and events space just a short walk from the seafront and Brighton station. The room combines large windows and clean, contemporary design with flexible seating, which made it ideal for both filming and group training. Its built‑in AV facilities, reliable power and good acoustic treatment meant I could set up quickly and capture consistent sound without having to bring in extensive additional kit. For NCPS, it provided a bright, welcoming backdrop that aligned with their professional yet approachable brand, while still giving participants a sense of privacy and focus.

Outcomes for NCPS

Following the event, NCPS will receive full‑length recordings of both keynotes, along with shorter edited segments that can be used within member training resources and online communications. The footage gives them a high‑quality record of an important Regional Connectors session and extends the reach of the speakers’ expertise far beyond the room on the day. For organisations working with sensitive or emotionally demanding topics, this project is a strong example of how thoughtful event filming can preserve the integrity of the content while creating engaging, shareable video for future learning.
